    Buying Second-Hand Pallet Racking Safely

Used racking can save 40–60% off new pricing — but only if it's been inspected, sorted and re-certified. Here's the practical buyer's checklist.

    TL;DR

    • Inspect every upright before purchase — most of the value (and risk) lives there.
    • Reject any frame with welded repairs, baseplate cracks or beyond-tolerance lean.
    • Insist on the original brand and rated UDL data.
    • Budget for re-certification under AS 4084:2023 after install.

    Key Takeaways

    • Used pricing typically lands 40–60% below new — but expect 5–15% rejection rate on inspection.
    • Mixed-brand stock is rarely worth buying — clip profiles don't interchange.
    • Galvanised stock holds value better than powder-coated for cold-store reuse.
    • Always re-anchor and re-issue load notices after relocation.
    • A QBCC-licensed installer should sign off the final configuration.

    Pre-purchase

    The pre-purchase inspection checklist

    • Verify single brand across all uprights and beams (no mixing).
    • Confirm OEM identification stickers or stampings are intact.
    • Inspect every upright for impact damage, lean and twist.
    • Check baseplates for cracks, missing washers and elongated holes.
    • Verify beam locks/safety pins are present on every connector.
    • Photograph any defects and tag them for sorting before purchase.
    • Get the seller's original engineering and load data in writing.

    After purchase

    Sorting, install and certification

Once the racking lands at your site, sort components by condition. Reject 5–15% as standard, then plan an engineered install — anchor every baseplate, re-fit beam locks, and have a competent person certify the finished configuration to AS 4084:2023.

    Don't skip the load notice

Every aisle entry needs a current load notice reflecting the new configuration. Even identical-looking beams may have different UDLs depending on length, so re-rate before you load product.
