    Galvanised vs Powder-Coated Pallet Racking

The finish you choose affects lifespan, cost and which environments your racking can survive in. Here's the plain-English finish comparison.

    TL;DR

    • Powder coat is the default for dry warehouses — cheapest, easiest to colour-match.
    • Hot-dip galvanised is the cold-store and outdoor standard.
    • Zinc-plated sits between the two on cost and corrosion resistance.
    • Stainless is reserved for food-grade, washdown and chemical environments.

    Key Takeaways

    • Powder coat costs less but chips, exposing steel to corrosion.
    • Hot-dip galv is self-healing at scratch sites — best for humid or cold-store environments.
    • Mixing finishes in one frame is fine structurally but creates inspection complexity.
    • Touch-up paint on galvanised steel is acceptable for minor abrasions only.
    • Cold-store buyers should specify galv from day one — retrofitting is expensive.

    Choosing

    How to pick a finish

    • Indoor dry warehouse → powder coat.
    • Cold storage (≤ 5 °C) → hot-dip galvanised.
    • Outdoor or canopy storage → hot-dip galvanised.
    • Food-grade washdown → stainless steel or HDG with wash regime.
    • Coastal/high-humidity QLD/NSW sites → at minimum zinc-plated, prefer HDG.

    Cold-store rule of thumb

Once you're below 5 °C with regular thermal cycling, powder coat will fail at every chip site within 5–7 years. Specify HDG from the outset — retrofitting costs 3–4× the original premium.

    Maintenance

    Maintaining each finish

Powder coat needs annual touch-up at chip sites. Galvanised steel is largely maintenance-free aside from spot zinc-rich paint at scratches. Stainless requires only periodic wash-down. Whichever finish you choose, document it in your AS 4084 inspection records so corrosion progression is tracked over the life of the system.
