Layout Design
Designing the Right Warehouse Layout
A well-designed layout balances storage density, picking speed and forklift safety. The biggest decisions are aisle widths, picking face configuration and how the racking integrates with your handling equipment.
Aisle widths
Wide aisle (3.5–4.0 m) for counterbalance forklifts, narrow aisle (2.5–3.0 m) for reach trucks, very narrow (1.6–1.8 m) for guided VNA — each unlocks more pallet positions.
Picking faces
Locate fast-moving SKUs at the lowest beam levels and on the closest aisles to the dispatch area. Reserve top levels for reserve stock and slow movers.
MHE compatibility
Confirm beam heights, entry tunnel widths and floor flatness suit your forklift mast height, lift capacity at height, and turning radius before specifying bays.
Flow & egress
Plan one-way traffic where possible, keep emergency egress clear, and don't block sprinkler heads or smoke vents with top beams or stored stock.
Quick capacity check
A 2,000 m² warehouse with 9 m clear height typically holds 1,200–1,800 pallet positions in selective racking, or 2,400+ in narrow aisle. The exact number depends on column grid, sprinkler clearance and pallet size — we model it for you during the site survey.
